Not Really a Key
The city of Marathon actually incorporates several islands including Key Vaca, Boot Key, Fat Deer Key, Long Point Key, Crawl Key, Knight's Key and Grassy Key. After the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 destroyed the Keys railway, the spans were converted to carry cars.
Connecting the Middle and Lower Keys
Jumping between the islands is a struggle, and Marathon is a central element in the journey. The Lower Keys all travel to the city for moving through to the Upper Keys.
